Dorothea Margaret Tanning (1910–2012) was an American artist known for her painting, printmaking, sculpture, writing, and poetry. She was born and grew up in Illinois. Surrealism influenced her early artwork. She married the German painter Max Ernst, and they lived in New York and Sedona, Arizona. Tanning died in 2012 at her home in Manhattan at the age of 101.
