Andre Masson
André Masson (1896-1987) was a versatile French artist known for his work as a painter, sculptor, illustrator, designer, and writer. Born in Balagny (Oise), he studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris and served in World War I. He participated in the Surrealist movement and explored themes of violence, eroticism, and chance effects through various mediums. Living in Spain from 1934 to 1936 influenced his art with Spanish myths and bullfighting motifs. In the USA during WWII, he created works inspired by nature’s forces before returning to France post-war. His later years in Aix-en-Provence saw him producing landscape paintings and abstract pieces, along with contributions to theatre productions and book illustrations.
