Henri Matisse

Henri Matisse was a French artist and one of the undisputed masters of 20th-century art, known for his use of color and original draughtsmanship. Although he worked as a draughtsman, printmaker, and sculptor, he is primarily recognized as a painter. Matisse is commonly regarded, alongside Picasso and Marcel Duchamp, as one of the three artists who defined revolutionary developments in the plastic arts in the early 20th century, contributing significantly to advancements in painting and sculpture. Initially labeled as a Fauve (wild beast), by the 1920s he was increasingly recognized as an upholder of the classical tradition in French painting. His mastery of expressive language through color and drawing, evident in a body of work extending over a half-century, earned him recognition as a leading figure in modern art.
