Jazz collection

In “Jazz,” Henri Matisse used a unique style to change what an illustrated book can be. He started this project in 1943 by creating cut-outs to make an illustrated book. Matisse described this process as “drawing with scissors” because he cut shapes directly from painted paper in bright colors. He then arranged these shapes into interesting designs. Color was very important to him, so he used the pochoir stencil technique to print the images, which helped him reproduce the bold colors of his cut-outs.
